The Baltic Way was a chain of people holding hands across the three Baltic countries. It signified their goal to regain the statehood by peaceful parliamentary means. Symbolically, it was the commemoration and mourning at the 50-year anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and its secret protocols, which divided the Eastern Europe without any knowledge and consent of its people. In the Baltic Way, the people themselves drew the line on the map, to counterfeit the line drawn by dictators and to take their destiny into their hands.
I also was here: nine years old, on Gediminas’ Hill, the mournful candle dropping hot wax on my hand, my father on one side and someone on the other. It was silent and solemn, and no one here to take a photo – only a feeling never to forget.
